Free Up Storage Space on iOS Device
Six tips on how to free up storage space on your iPad, iPhone, iPod are described at this site, sent to us by Jim Hamm. He includes this suggestion, "Another tip is to frequently close open apps, as they all consume memory as they run in the background. If, say, your iPad seems slower, I bet that available memory is about gone and this slows down the iPad. Many of us -- me included -- often forget to close apps after we open them, on an iPad or iPhone.
"Double tap the Home Button to view all the running apps along the bottom of the screen. Yes, they're all running and consuming memory. Close them and your device should run quicker."
iPad, iPhone Questions
Jim Hamm walks us through some questions for AT&T customers: "If you're an AT&T customer, suddenly in the new iPad a 4G icon appears, as it did in the iPhone 4 upgrade to the iPhone 4S. Are you really getting 4G performance? What is 4G anyway? Do you even care?
"Well, note that no matter what the icon shows, if you're really getting 4G your rate plan will be different. Ah, yes. AT&T likes to do a bit of a fast-foot-shuffle in marketing their so-called 4G service. The following article gives a good explanation of what's going on. If interested, read on. If something like this bores you to tears, tap the delete button and move on...(grin)"....Jim

Considering iPhone and IPad Speeds
Jim Hamm reports: "I'm quite pleased with the speed of 3G on my iPhone. Zee and I just tried an experiment with our iPads. She has the new iPad with 4G here in Scottsdale. I've got the iPad 2 with 3 G. We entered websites in Safari and clicked send at the same time. Couldn't tell the difference. As the article explains only in certain conditions will one appreciate 4G speeds. For everyday surfing the net and emails, 4G probably won't make an appreciable difference."
An iPad Experience: From Frown to Smile!
"Last week I had the misfortune to drop my beloved iPad and crack the screen." exclaimed Mary Ann Clark. She explained, "I took it to our local Apple repair shop but they don't handle iPad repairs. The kind gentleman did give me information about a service that could repair it for $189.00. Before sending it off I checked Google and discovered that even though the screen isn't covered under the warranty, sometimes an Apple store will do a courtesy replacement. It seemed like a trip to the valley was in order."
She described what happened next. "I made an appointment at one of the Phoenix-area stores and drove down the next morning. They weren't able to do a free swap (that program ended when the new iPad was announced) but they 'repaired' my iPad by giving me a new one for $199. (Because this was a repair rather than a purchase there was no sales tax. Yea!) And I walked out with my new iPad the same day.
"I also discovered that Apple now offers AppleCare Plus for the iPad that includes damage from accidents like mine, spilling liquids on it and the like. With this new AppleCare, my repair would only have been $45. This wasn't available when I first got my iPad but the new one is now covered!"
And her conclusion, "Not a bad experience, all considered."
Review of iPad
From the voice of experience Jim Hamm writes, "Here is a link to a good review of using an iPad — what it does well and its limitations. If you — or someone you know — might be considering whether it's worthwhile or not to purchase an iPad at some point in the future, reading this article will give you a good picture of what you can expect. I pretty much agree with what the article says, except the author doesn't point out how useful the iPad is for reading books. This is a big plus for the iPad, and shouldn't be overlooked. Downloading ebooks from a library or Amazon, for example, is very handy.
"I do find my iPad useful, and glad that I have one. It probably isn't a replacement for a computer for most people, nor, I suspect, was it intended to be."
Prolonging Battery Life: iPad
Jim Hamm passes this along to our PMUG members who have an iPad: "Here's a tip for prolonging battery life on your iPad.
"1. Batteries do get less effective as they get older, and 100% in a year’s time may mean half as much battery life as it does now — but there are precautions you can take to reduce the aging effects on your battery.
2. Don’t charge your battery all the time just because it isn’t at 100%.
3. Use the iPad until the battery is 100% depleted. If possible, leave it for an hour after depletion.
4. When charging, allow it to charge fully back to 100%.
5. Heat will also decrease your battery life, so take your iPad out of the case while charging.
6. Don’t leave the iPad plugged into a sleeping computer, as the battery will drain.
"By taking these steps you can ensure the battery is fully 'cycled' every time and should have minimal loss of battery life. Remember, every time you charge the device it will hold a little less charge, so avoid charging when it isn’t necessary."
About iPad -- Of Course!
What did you expect to read in the news today? The iPad is here, of course. Jim Hamm is grinning as he informs us that Zee's new iPad is due in today, and her new case was delivered at 7 pm last night. "I have no plans to abandon my iPad 2, but as Jason (Snell) cautions, I haven't see the new retina display yet. Wonder if I could talk Zee into swapping with me."
Jim refers to this by Jason Snell, MacWorld. And he has found a peek inside the new iPad here. Jim remarks, "It is mostly battery, with a small logic board, small electronic parts, and lots of adhesive. I wonder, when they try to reassemble this, will it work again?"
You'll find lots of news stories about today's debut at the Apple Stores. Here's one other article.
Today is (drumroll, please) . . . !
Today is International Wait in Line for Your New iPad Day, according to one news report. Maybe you saw the small posters at our WalMart today? It's on sale tomorrow. Jim Hamm found this review, and there's 15 large photos to show the features, and 103 comments by people who put their 2 cents in.
The new iPad video and TV ad is shown here, and more info is here.
Inside the Factory
Jim Hamm sends this video of a visit inside a Foxconn factory where the iPad is manufactured. He comments, "Very interesting to see what it is like to work there. When you see the crowded dorms, keep this in mind when you see the homes where the employees came from."For some reason all the criticism about working conditions in China's factories tend to focus on Apple's suppliers. I wonder where is the criticism about all the other computer, TV, etc., manufacturers that build and import products from China?"
Speculation on iPad 3
From Jim Hamm, "Here's more speculation on the next iPad. There's not many areas in the U.S. that have LTE coverage yet, but eventually it will spread and the next iPad is said to be able to connect to it. The download speed of LTE is about 7 times faster than 3G. So, if you're pleased with 3G speed now (I am), you are really gonna be happy with LTE. Prescott finally got 3G coverage from AT&T about a month or so ago. About time, too. Verizon has had 3G for a long time.
"Smart move by Apple, if it happens. As LTE spreads across the U.S. many people who presently own an iPad 1 or 2 will get the hots to purchase the iPad 3. I know someone, and it ain't me. However, when LTE comes to the Valley area I, ahem, might have to reconsider...(grin)..."
And here Jim renders his closing words (for now), "If the next IPad supports LTE, then I suspect the next iPhone release will too. And so the cycle continues, and Apple's bank account gets bigger and mine gets smaller...(grin)....."
iPhone / iPad Tip
"If your iPhone or iPad's Home Button should become less responsive or 'laggy,'" writes Jim Hamm, "here's a tip on how to calibrate it that might help."

"You’ve been waiting for a good reason, now go out and buy an iPad!" John Carter exclaims.
"By the way, the iPad camera connection kit (shown in the lower right corner of the image above) contains two adapters. One lets you connect a mini-USB cable directly to the iPad from the camera and the other lets you insert an SD card directly to the iPad. This is a very handy kit to have even for your iPhone 4 or iPod Touch. And of course you’ll also want the HDMI connector to connect your HD video camera directly to the iPad (or iPhone 4 or iPod Touch) or to connect your iPad (or iPhone 4 or iPod Touch) directly to your HD TV.
"With so many connectors to do so many things with, let’s hope that Apple comes out with an iPad that has the ports built in so you won’t need all those gadgets."

Each Genius Will Use iPad
"Click here for an article on how Apple Stores are going to use iPads in place of MacBook Pros at the Genius Bar," Jim Hamm says. "This seems like a good idea, to me, anyway, as the iPads are smaller, easier to handle, and less expensive for Apple to have tied-up in their stores."
